Sight Words From Julie Burton, a K-5 special education teacher at Oakdale Elementary School in Oakdale: ìTo teach students to recognize sight words in isolation and in context, I make a booklet of colored paper. On each piece of paper, I write one sight word (with a colored marker) that the student needs to learn. I ask the student to dictate a sentence to me. I write the sentence on the bottom of the page with the sight word written in the same color as it is on the top of the page. Finally, I draw a square in the middle and ask the student to draw a picture in it to help them remember the word. You may cover the picture with a flap of paper after a period of time and allow the students to look under the flap only if they absolutely cannot remember the word.î |
